The root of the word 'いただきます' is ‘いただく’, which is also used as ‘謙譲語‘ of the word ‘もらう’.
As the shows, ‘いただきます’ was an expression of respect when receiving something from a person of high status. In the past, food was a precious commodity and food was often treated as an offering to the gods. So it is said that it eventually came to be used as a greeting for meals. Today, the term is redefined to refer to the ‘life‘ of the food itself, including meat, fish, eggs and, of course, vegetables, and is considered to express respect and gratitude to the people who catch and grow the food, and, of course, the food itself. When you come to Japan, please join your hands together, bow your head slightly and say 'いただきます' before eating your meals. That's all for today. Thank you for listening and see you next week. Bye!
