今日は先日、日本人の間で話題になった言葉を学びましょう。 

Today we will learn a word that was recently discussed among the Japanese. 

You were taking photos at a tourist attraction when you were approached by this 「写真撮影はご遠慮願えますか？」 Now, what action should you take? 

あなたが観光地で写真を撮っていると、このように声をかけられました。 「写真撮影はご遠慮願えますか？」 さて、あなたはどういう行動をとるべきでしょうか。 

 １．You say「もう一枚だけ撮らせてください」

 ２．You apologise「すみません。撮影してはいけないと知りませんでした」and put the camera away. 

The correct answer is No.2. Did you get it right? 

正解は、２番！正解できましたか？ 

In Japan, understatement tends to be preferred over explicit caution or prohibition. For this reason, they may say "お願いします" when they would normally have to say "Photography is not allowed' or "Please don't take a picture". If someone addresses you with phrases such as “ご遠慮ください”, “ご遠慮願います” or “お控えください”, remember that you have to stop, not "it's okay if it's just a little". 

日本では、はっきり注意する、禁止するなどするよりも、遠回しな表現が好まれる傾向が強いです。 そのため、本来であれば「写真撮影は禁止です」「やめてください」と言わなければならないところを「〜お願います」と、言うことがあります。 「ご遠慮ください」「ご遠慮願います」「お控えください」などといった表現で話しかけられた場合は、「少しならいいですよ」ではなく「やめなければならないのだ」と覚えておきましょう。
